We fear growing old. We buy tons of products to try to perserve our youthful looks and dread any major milestone birthday. We hope that the video clerk at Blockbuster will not refer to us as sir and that we will still get carded when we go into the bar. I know people who use to be older than me who know are years younger, at least that is what their profiles say.
It was this weekend where I learned how you can hold on to your youth in the most effective way. What is my new found secret, simple do not get old.
I attended a birthday party at Chuck E Cheese this weekend. I was excited the moment I received the invitation. It had been years since I had been there. I knew how much fun it was as a kid so I couldn’t wait to go back and play games until I had too many tickets to count.
I arrived and couldn’t wait to enjoy the fun. Yes it ws loud full of screaming and yelling kids but that wasn’t going to ruin my fun. Justin and I got 20 dollars worth of tokens and off we were laying skee ball. Of course the games where smaller and lower to the ground then I remember but I still had fun. Chuck E Cheese has all games being 1 token so 0 dollars got us a lot of games. I played all sorts of games and laughed at how silly of a time I was having.
When they annouced that we needed to return to the table for the birthday party and pizza, I sat back down at the table and noticed all the old people in the building including my nephew and his new girlfriend. My nephew use to play video games all the time but instead of playing, he stayed at the table the whole time, just sitting there. It was at this moment I learned how to stay young.
We may fear the natural process of aging, we may fear our age going up but what we should fear is letting ourselves get old. There is nothing wrong with maturing. Not all of us even get to mature but getting old is a choice we make. It is the choice between having fun with life, or just sitting there and letting it pass you by. Before you know it, you are old and wonder what did you do with all your time.
You want to stay young, then have fun. Enjoy life and make the most out of it. Play skee ball, eat pizza and do the chicken dance with Chuck E Cheese. Staying young comes from the choice you make to always live your life to the fullest.
I remember a great family friend, Jinx. She was so full of life and adventure. She was always smiling and acting silly. She wanted to have fun and nothing stopped her. She knew that life was a limited engagement and she did not hesitate to enjoy every minute of it. People loved her and were drawn to her because of this. This is the person I want to be. The person who matures and ages but never gets old because I am here to enjoy and live my life.

One of my favorite quotes is (and I will probably butcher it here): “We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.”
