A lot of my friends have been talking about weddings lately. One of my friends is planning her wedding right now while two friends of mine just got married in New Orleans. So Let’s dream a little together. Right now gay marriage is not legal but it doesn’t mean I can’t think what it would be like to have a wedding of my own.

Part of me would want the magical fairytale wedding. A great location with tons of guests. Formal dress and a wonderful reception decorated with white calla lilies and gardenias. I would love to be in a nice black and white tux looking sharp while the the sun sets outside the windows of the reception hall.

The other part of me would love to just do it up in Vegas. Invite everyone I know just to have a good time on the Vegas strip. Get married in a cheezy chapel and then head off with your friends and family in a limos to have a fun dinner and night on the town.

I guess the details are not that important as who you marry. It is really about finding love and celebrating the public commitment you have for each other, forever. And yes, I believe it can last forever. :)

I wonder how many of you would love to be married right now (straight or gay) and how many of you are married and would do it again.  What would it be like?

My husband and I decided to get married on February 29th, mostly because we’re just not the romantic types. We also felt it would give us a great reason to have one super anniversary celebration every four years as opposed to a petit one every single revolution around the sun.

I also find that planning Gay weddings is much simpler (at least in our case) than it is for hetero ones. I’ll never forget the day a book that must’ve been about eleven inches thick was slammed down in front of my husband and I, cover to cover in wedding invitations. We opened the first page, saw a pretty invitation and pointed at it. “that one.”

The wedding itself was in Niagara Falls, so how you described the “vegas” scene is more or less what happened with us. Afterwards, everyone just went out for a night of fun, followed by a cool weekend.

Your wedding does sound simple and great. That was the perfect way to celebrate and enjoy life.

I think sometimes gay weddings are easy because it is just the two of you planning it. A lot of time in straight marriages it becomes a family event with two families and their input and the braidemaids, etc. Instead of a couple saying, this is what we want and this is what makes us happy.

We’re lucky here in Canada that marriage has been legal for a few years now. My partner of 11 years and I married last July. We decided to go against the “norm” of a traditional marriage. It was me and him, our 2 dogs, our 2 best friend witnesses, and the marriage commissioner. It was on a hill in Stanley park overlooking the ocean. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day. We wore sandals, short sleeve button shirts, and linen trousers. It was over in about 15 minutes. It was perfect.

But I think you are right, it doesn’t matter how you do it. Just that it is a memorable moment when you take that next step in commitment to the one you love. :)

That sounds like a wonderful ceremony with all the important guests there. :) One of the most inportant being your partner. :) Thanks for sharing!

    A wedding sounds great!
Chuck & I have been together since 1974, it would be nice to make it “legal”!

Michael – you couldn’t be more right – it really CAN work! As you already know, Dennis and I were married right here in Florida (Sarasota, to be specific). NO, it’s not recognized legally, NO we can’t file joint taxes, and NO, we didn’t even get a marriage license. However … we have been happily married for 10 years now. The wedding was a beautiful affair. We were married October 11 in a gazebo at Sarasota Jungle Gardens (I would VERY HIGHLY recommend a wedding there, the staff is amazing) with tuxes, a wedding cake, great reception … the works.
We don’t need the government to tell us that we can love one another. And, by the way, I was pleasantly surprised that everyone involved in the wedding professionally (caterer, reception hall, limousine service, etc. was supportive and terrific – some even asked for pics of our service to put in their albums for future glay/lesbian clients).

And I would do it all again – he’s the most wonderful man in the world and I couldn’t be happier.

I thought I would be married forever and one day my partner told me he wanted to be single and alone again. Hard to face and hard to say it, but sometimes things don’t work but it doesn’t mean you can be happy.

Life doesn’t always follow the perfect fairy tale we were taught to believe. It has a lot of ups and downs but as you said, it doesn’t mean you can’t be happy.

In the UK we have now been able to get married – or they call it – a Civil Ceremony, for a couple of years. Having been together for 11 years we decided to invite our families and friends to share our happiness in 2006, when we were “civilly partnered”. It was a wonderful two days, having the actual ceremony on the first, with our parents present, and our two closest friends as witnesses. The following day was a party with all the rest of the family, friends and work colleagues.
Our celebrations were not elaborate, but we made sure everyone enjoyed the occasion, and my nieces and nephew all attended too – we have been together for most if not all of their respective lives, and they are so loving and accepting of us. Their ages range from 10 to 15. We are lucky to have such supportive family, and they mean the world to us.

That sounds just wonderful. You celebrated your love with the people who love you both. Sounds like a perfect 2 days to me. Thank you for sharing makes me want to have a wedding more and more.
