Yes I have a fear of flying! When I was 10 years old, I flew for the first time with my family to a wedding. We flew from Orlando at Atlanta and then switched planes to end up in our destination. On my very first flight as we were landing in Atlanta, our plane hit wind shire and we flew a HUGE distance. It was very scary and sudden. Businessmen sitting in front me briefcases flew up in the air from their laps. I didn’t know what was happening and thought this is how we landed.

When we were safe on land, everyone was freaked out and talking about it. Of course we had to get on to another plane and head on. We would also have to fly home…

On the first flight home, I burst into tears and begged my mom to never make me fly again. I do not know why I was so scared but I was and never wanted to do this again.

8 years later at 18, my family and I went to the Bahamas. Of course we flew and I was so excited about the flight. The morning I woke up to get ready, I had a panic attack out of no where. I did not know what it was or what to do. I just knew I all of sudden did not want to get on the plane. I was able to relax and make the flight and I had the best experience and a great vacation.

Years later I would fly again from Orlando to California for a grad school program. We were there for one week. I would be flying with a bunch of friends but no family or loved ones this time. I was scared but was able to make it. I did it and had another good experience.

Today, I am flying out of Orlando to go to Vegas for a wedding. I have always wanted to go to Vegas and I am so excited for this great opportunity to go as well as be part of my friend’s wedding celebration. Am I still nervous about flying? YES!

I will be nervous the morning of all the way until we take off and finally hit the cruising altitude. Once that happens, I relax and will be OK. Do I like flying? Not really but I am learning to work on this fear because it is keeping me from achieving some goals in my life.

I am not a huge traveller but there are a few places I would like to go. I may never love flying but I do not want to have this fear to keep me from being able to enjoy trips.

I remember a No Fear t shirt I loved which said, “Don’t allow your fears to get in the way of your dreams.”
