Bored

Posted In: Coaching by Michael

I swear at least once a day Nick and I will send an IM to each other saying, “bored.”

Are we really bored? Even if we are truly bored, isn’t there something we could do? It may not the type of activity we were looking for but there is always something to do.  I think being bored is a state of mind when I really can’t think of something I would rather be doing but I know a huge list of things I don’t want to be doing that need to be done.

Last night I was feeling bored and thought to myself, you could:

  • Clean your closet that is a mess
  • Write another chapter in your book
  • Read the rest of your current book you are reading
  • Play wii with Justin
  • Go for a swim or walk
  • Spend sometime playing with Piper
  • Vacuum under the bed
  • Touch up the paint in the living room
  • Update your blog site information
  • Watch the movie that can in the mail
  • Clean out the back bedroom
  • or start one of the THOUSAND projects you have in your head

Of course, I didn’t want to do any of those things. I wanted to do something FUN. Could I tell you what the fun thing was, NO! So instead I decided to watch reruns of Family Guy and do nothing.

Being bored is a state of mind you have control of. When you feel bored you can make the choice to lay there or you can motivate yourself to take action on some of the tasks you have on your To Do List. Sure it is not exactly what you have in mind, but it will at least make you productive.

I bet even just becoming productive will make you feel better and then maybe you will come up with a great way to celebrate your success for completing the task. It could even be FUN! :)

It is very easy for me to be bored and lazy. It is also easy for this to turn in to a slump and a minor depression. I like your approach of self examination and your list of solutions. There is no excuse to be bored given all there is to see and do and get done. Really when I think of all the projects and chores and experiences I want to do and get done, it because quite the opposite. It becomes very invigorating and sensational. Thank you for yet another trinket of wisdom today! Have a great one!

Perhaps it would be more accurate to say we’re not “bored” we just “want to be entertained”! LOL We all have plenty we could (and should) be doing to avoid boredom - but sometimes we just want to have fun. And contradictory to what Cyndi Lauper may say about “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, us guys need fun too! LOL

OMG looking at that list I can only imagine how good it would feel to do all those things on that list or complete all the items on my list for that matter!

I know what you mean feeling better with the productivity. The proof in that is when someone tells me they are on their way over. Suddenly I am filled with energy cleaning my entire place at light speed. I should have friends that threaten me with a visit just so I clean.

On that note I think your note has made me want to go swimming! Later!
