How You Measure Life

The Universe sent me this note:

Just wanted to remind you, Michael, that sometimes success is better measured in smiles received, giggles heard, and hands held, than in dollars earned, deadlines met, and kilos shed.

And I must say, you’ve done well for yourself.

Yeah us!
The Universe

Isn’t it true?

What would your life be like if you spent more time working towards what really counts?

How do you make this shift? Give me a call. We will talk! :)

Review: 2009 Goals

Last year in October I wrote: 30 Goals for my 30th Year Now that it has been a year (and a few months…) it is time to check in and see how I did.

Here are are the goals I completed:

  1. Go on the segway tour at EPCOT – Rode a segway, not this one.
  2. Go to Vegas – DONE!
  3. Complete a 5K and get a medal – DONE!
  4. Complete my first book – In progress and almost done…
  5. Work on my fear of flying – DONE! Not perfect but much better!
  6. Participate in National Novel Writing Month – Yes I did!
  7. Go to Not So Scary Mickey’s Halloween Party – DONE!
  8. Go for a walk at least 4 days a week – Much better, needs to be consistent.
  9. Keep a gratitude journal – DONE!
  10. Work on one thing a month to simplify my life – DONE!
  11. Double my current blog subscribers – DONE!
  12. See Cirque “O” Show – DONE!
  13. Work on reducing stress in my life with an activity a month – DONE!
  14. See the Bellagio fountains – DONE!
  15. See Cirque Zummanity show – DONE!
  16. See the Fremont Street Experience – DONE!
  17. Continue to work on eating healthier – Better but the Fried Oreos did not help…
  18. Break the habit of sleeping with the TV on – DONE!

But Michael, what happens to the ones you did not complete? Good question!

As I am working on my goals for the new year, I will review the ones I did not complete. I need to see why I did not complete them.

  • Did I not really want it?
  • Do I no longer want it?
  • Did I lose my commitment to it?
  • Do I need to refocus on it?

Now I create my new list. Add goals I still need to work on, delete ones and add new ones. The new year gives you an opportunity to refocus.

Once my list is complete, I will post it for everyone to see. I would love to hear one or two or all of your goals. Drop me a message on Facebook or in the comments. We can cheer each other on!

Start Your Week of Being Yourself

My friend Seth came up with this great quote:

When in doubt, be who you are and let everyone else figure out how to deal with it.”

Can it be that simple? YES! Aren’t you best at being yourself instead of trying to figure out how to be what everyone else wants you to be?

Great way to start your week! Be Yourself.

THEY ARE ALL GAY!

Seriously! They are ALL gay!

Facebook allows us to find (stalk) people from our past. It is a great opportunity to connect with people who were once part of our lives but we lost touch with.

Including people from middle school…

I have shared that my experience through middle school was pretty rough. I was teased for being gay (something I did not at the time) quite often. It was a hard time and I struggled with dealing with the bullying.

It was even harder for me because my sister was a lesbian. These kids were teaching me that being gay was wrong, different and something that would lead you to be picked on. I loved my sister and did not understand how being gay could be so wrong. This just added to my own personal struggle.

Well… as I am looking up people from my middle school past I am amazed by something a lot of them have in common…

They are ALL gay! Yes, A LOT of the kids in middle school who bullied me are all gay.

Do I blame these kids for making life hard on me? No. A lot of them were having their own personal struggles. What happened in my life made me stronger. It made me who I am today. I not only survived, I thrived through it all.

I wonder if school would have been different if being gay wasn’t seen as a bad thing. Maybe I would be friends with those guys who gave me a hard time. Maybe we would have been support for each other.

Maybe together we wouldn’t have felt so different…

12 Days to a Better Life

The 12 Days of Christmas is a famous song to celebrate Christmas cheer. As I am not an expert in holiday cheer, I am going to share with you 12 ways to improve your life. All you have to do is complete each item until Christmas and see how you feel on the big day.

Day 1 is about dreaming. I want you to sit down and take as long as you need and dream about what you want your life to be like in 5 years. Think about all areas. Life, Health, Money, Love, Fun, Career, etc. Then write down what you come up with.

Day 2 is about setting goals. Now review what you want your life to be like in 5 years. What are some of the action items you notice you need to complete? Just select 5 or 10 of them you are willing to commit to this year.

Day 3 is about creating visual reminders. You have your 5 to 10 goals. Now create something you can look at on a daily basis. Maybe it is just posting the list and crossing them off as you go. Maybe you create a board with pictures to remind you of your goals. Maybe you use an app on your phone so it is always with you. It is up to you. But I want you to be able to see your goals each day.

Day 4 is about decluttering. You have great goals and I do not want anything to get in your way so we are going to move some physical barriers today. I know there is somewhere in your life that is a mess. I want you to clean it up! This could be your desk, car, bathroom sink, whole bedroom, whatever you want! You select it and complete it today. No excuses.

Day 5 is about showing  gratitude. Today I want you to make a point of thinking about how wonderful your life is right now. Sure every one’s life could be better but today we focus on what is working. I want you, at the end of the day, to write down 5 things that you are grateful for.

Day 6 is about stop doing one thing. There is something in your life you know is holding you back or dragging you down.  Today is the day when you commit to stop doing at least one thing. It can be to stop smoking, stop gossiping, stop being negative, stop not returning phone calls, stop being so impatient, or stop self doubting yourself. There are tons we can come up with but you only have to pick on and stop!

Day 7 is about start doing one thing. OK so yesterday you stopped doing something and are keeping that going. Today I want you to think of something you could start doing. Maybe going for a walk, believing in yourself, allowing yourself to relax, maybe showing gratitude every day, etc. I want you to commit to starting one thing today and to continue it on.

Day 8 is about acknowledgment. You have done a lot in just these few days. I am sure you have done a lot in this last month, past 6 months, the whole year and your life. Today I want you to take some time to acknowledge all the things you have done this past year. Make a list and do not judge. Just write down everything that comes to mind. You have done well and will continue to do well.

Day 9 is about making a choice. We spend a lot of our lives thinking about what to do but never really making the choice to go this way or that. Instead we stand, looking at the options, and telling ourselves it is safer to stay here. Today you will make a choice. Pick one thing you have been thinking about and decide today you will make a choice and move forward, regardless. You are making a choice.

Day 10 is about watching your energy. You naturally know what is good for you. You know how you can work all day, do almost nothing but come home and you are so tired you have to go to bed early. Then you can work all day and work hard. You have friends in town and you rush out to meet them and spend way too much time talking late into the night. Not tired at all. This is because of energy. When we are excited, happy, passionate, and full of joy we have TONS of energy. Today I want you to watch your energy. See what fills you up, what gets you going and notice what drains you. This awareness allows you to see a clearer view of your current state.

Day 11 is about relaxing. You have been through 10 days!! You deserve a break. Really you always deserve a break and never make time for it. Today you are going to plan an event to relax. A massage, nap, reading a good book, hot bath, etc. Today you need to make time to relax. Truly relax.

Day 12 is about celebration. You did it! 12 days to a better life so you get to celebrate. How do you want to mark this journey? What can you do for yourself? Share your success with me and others! Let us know how it went. Trust me, I want to know. Celebrate how well you did and remember to keep celebrating all your successes.

    Not Getting Old; Not Maturing

Lets start off by saying yes, I will be getting older as the years fly by.  I know this is true but I refuse to be old or mature.

    The definition of old is:

    a : showing the effects of time or use : worn, aged <old shoes> b : no longer in use : discarded <old rags> c : of a grayish or dusty color <old mauve> d : tiresome <gets old fast>

    The definition of mature is:

a : having completed natural growth and development : ripe b : having attained a final or desired state <mature wine> c : having achieved a low but stable growth rate <paper is a mature industry>

Being old and being mature is not a desired state I want in my life and neither should you!

I do not want to be old. I do not want a time when I am no longer of use. I do not want a time when I am worn and over and tiresome.

I want to stay fresh and full of innovative ideas, thoughts and adventures. I want to know I am still participating in life and not letting it just pass me by because my time has come and gone.

I do not want to be mature. I do not want to be a place in my life where I am fully developed. A moment where I make the mistake to believe I have learned and done everything I need to in this life. A moment when I believe I can not learn anymore from someone older, younger or different than me. I do not want a time when my growth and development is done and now I sit here and wait…wait to get old…

I want to grow! That is what I want. I want to know I take the time to learn new things, experience new things and love new things. My life is a journey and I am going to continue creating it along the way.

I will not settle for a time when I decide I am all I can be. There will always be something else I can do to push myself once again.

Now the question is, are you with me?
